How to Start Working Out (And How to Stick to It!)

So, you’ve decided to start working out.

Congratulations! You’re on the path to better sleep, improved mental health, a stronger heart, and so many other benefits.

But despite the many improvements exercising can bring to your life, you may be a little hesitant to actually start. We get it. Making the leap into working out can be daunting. But we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Set specific, achievable goals.

You should create short- and long-term goals. These goals should not only be focused on weight, or how you want the scale to look. For example, your long-term goal may be to be able to run a half marathon in a year, but you should focus on your short-term goal of being able to run one mile in your first month.

2. Make a (realistic) plan…

Don’t expect to go to the gym every day right off the bat. Setting unrealistic goals for yourself is setting yourself up for failure. Instead, try going to the gym twice a week at first, and then work your way up to three or four times a week. Go at times when it’s convenient for you, and don’t just pencil in your workouts into your calendar, pen them in! This will keep you accountable.

3. ...But have a Plan B.

Sometimes life gets in the way of working out. That’s when you need a back-up plan. Have a gym buddy to go with you, and keep your gym bag packed and ready to go, so all you need is to grab it on the way out the door. If you really can’t fit time to hit the gym, try a bodyweight workout at home.

4. Do what you like.

Don’t force yourself to run if you hate it. Working out shouldn’t be a chore you dread, so try out different things to find exercises you enjoy. Sample a variety of classes, ask for help and get familiar with the gym’s equipment, or join clubs like a cycling or hiking club. If nothing else, make a pact with yourself that you will only watch your favorite show while working up a sweat.

5. Create a program.

Exercise is a science, so you should do your research! There are tons of workout plans online that you can follow based on your goals. In general you should lift weights and do aerobic exercises when you go to the gym. And don’t be afraid to ask for help! Our trainers are willing to work with you and suggest which routines may be best for your body.

6. Do it for yourself, and no one else.

Exercise is never a punishment. It should be a celebration of what your body can achieve. Treat exercise the way you would with any other commitment, like your job or your family. Don’t let yourself down! And finally, remember why you started. Keep your motivation in the back of your head throughout your fitness journey if you ever feel like quitting.
