It’s that time of year again! The new year always comes along with a lot of reflection on the past year, and goal setting for the year at hand. If you’re one of the majority, then chances are you made a New Years Resolution last year and then slowly faded away from that long term goal. This year is going to be different, because you are going to have an attainable goal, with a roadmap on how to achieve it day-to-day, and month-to-month. 2016 is your time, so what are you waiting for?

5 Strategies for keeping your 2016 New Years Resolutions

1. MAKE A DETAILED, ATTAINABLE GOAL

The most common reason we fail at lofty New Years Resolutions is just that they aren’t realistic to adapt into our everyday lifestyle. The way to create a successful goal is to reflect on the adaptations you will need to make in your life in order to achieve it, and then think about the time frame.

What are you going to do to achieve that goal? You want to lose 40 pounds? If so, what are you going to do differently this year that is going to allow you achieve that goal? Set yourself up for success instead of failure this year. Change your mindset from wanting to lose “X” number of pounds to making sure you eat better and go to the gym four times a week. These subtle adaptations to the wording of your goal can promote success themselves.

2. MAKE A ROAD MAP FOR YOUR GOAL

A New Years Resolution is a goal that is going to span over 12 months. That is 365 days that you will have to execute that goal daily in all aspects of your life. If you want to lose that weight, make a monthly schedule on the first day of every month on when you are going to the gym, and stick to it. Plan out your meals for the week and stick to it.

These weekly and daily checklists will keep you focused and on track, while also making you feel like you are truly accomplishing things.

3. POST YOUR GOALS, EVERYWHERE

If you interviewed a successful entrepreneur, a high-ranking CEO, a traveling motivational speaker, they will all tell you the same thing: they see their goals every day.

Write down your goals, and post them around your house. Change the title of your alarm on your phone to a motivational quote or your resolution. Post pictures and quotes of people who inspire you in every place that you will consistently be that week. Surround yourself with success. Surround yourself with those extra methods of motivation, and you are going to find that you are more likely to execute your goals in the long run.

It’s easy to hit that snooze button at 5:30 on Monday morning when you need to go to the gym, but it will be a lot harder to do when your phone says “Get your ass out of bed!,” and your bedroom door has a sign on it that says “I want to lose 30 pounds.” Every single avenue you can use to push yourself, do it. Your future self will thank you.

4. READ OTHER PEOPLE’S SUCCESS STORIES

So you want to lose a bunch of weight this year but the end of February comes, and you’ve been killing yourself in the gym but still aren’t seeing the results. Just keep on pushing. Nothing that we really want comes easy, and this will be true if your New Years Resolution is a substantial one.

Read about other’s success stories. Get online and read about someone who lost 30 pounds. Find similarities in the hardships they faced, but find motivation in the end goals they achieved. We are all human. We are going to slip up, but with an end goal in mind and a process, we can achieve greatness.

You’re going to need to keep pushing it in the gym. You’re going to need to keep waking up an extra 30 minutes early for work. You’re going to need to keep driving past those fast food restaurants on the way home, but when the year ends and you did it, a celebration will be in line.

5. REWARD YOURSELF FREQUENTLY

A year is a long time. You are going to be grinding every day, and it’s going to take some effort. At times it might be exhausting, but keep pushing. This is why it is important to reward yourself along the way. This doesn’t mean going to McDonald's after going to the gym five times in a week, because that would be counterproductive.

If you have stuck to your weekly gym goals, then plan something fun and social for the weekend. Maybe go to a sports game, hang out with friends or take the family on a day trip. Do something fun that you can momentarily take your mind off of the grind, but that will also not set you back. Take care of your body. Make sure your are stretching properly, sleeping the proper number of hours and getting the correct amount of nutrients. Drastically changing your workout regime can create a toll on your body. Seek chiropractic care if you strain your back, neck or other joints, and take the time to recover.

The purpose of a New Years Resolution is to better yourself, not to beat yourself down. Make sure to remind yourself that you’re doing well.
